You can not seal the top so it is always open and can spill out. With the hole in the top this keeps the coffee from staying hot.

This mug feels very durable and keeps beverages hot.
The only drawback (which does NOT bother me) is the the plastic top scratched very easily when I dried with using a paper towel.
Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and would definitely recommend it to friends and strangers alike.

Saw this beautiful royal purple tumbler and had to have it! I prefer the purer taste of coffee and tea in ceramic instead of stainless or plastic. This tumbler keeps my tea and coffee hot a long time. The slender profile is easier for me to hold than the shorter, rounder, all ceramic tumblers. Also, the outer stainless shell seems less slippery to hold. A barista almost dropped my Rodarte tumbler because of the slippery factor. I'm loving this purple tumbler :) Wish Starbucks would make a purple 16oz tumbler with a grip band too!
